It would be another fifteen years before Billy Joel gave Long Island’s working boats an anthem with The Downeaster “Alexa”, but the spirit of that song was already alive on Montauk’s shores in the late 1970s. Men like Dominic “Dom Dom” Grace had been hauling nets through the surf for decades, their lives measured in tides, weather, and the weight of the day's catch.

The Land Rover I had purchased four years earlier gave me new access to the beaches and back trails of the East End, and to the fishermen who worked these shores. On that morning in 1978, its four-wheel drive carried me across the ocean sands from Hither Woods to Gurney’s, to a fleeting intersection of time and place to where I would photograph a handful of Montauk’s last haul-seiners at work.

Haul-seining was a hard, simple rhythm: launch the dory from the beach, pull through the breakers, pay out the net in a great arc, then haul it back in by hand, hoping the sea had been generous. Before sonar, before GPS, there was only experience—reading surface, swell, and sky, trusting instinct and memory to find the fish.

By the time of this photograph, the morning’s work was done. The Atlantic lay just beyond the frame, its roar now softened by distance. Dominic’s wooden dory had been hauled up onto the sand and settled on a trailer above the tide line at Gurney’s Beach. The net from the morning’s haul spilled and tangled at his feet as he pulled, sorted, and gathered it back into order—hands moving by memory rather than thought, the practiced choreography of someone who had done this thousands of times before.

I stood a short distance away, watching the scene arrange itself. Behind Dominic, the beach and shoreline fell into soft focus. In front of him, in the direction of his gaze, lay the surf where he had worked at first light. The harsh late-morning sun, filtered through salt haze, carved the planes of his face and the worn planks of the dory, picking out the texture of wood, net, and weathered skin.

For a few seconds, the motion around him seemed to slow. The work of the morning was finished, the next launch not yet begun. In that narrow pause between labor and rest, Dominic stood quietly in the boat—steady, self-contained, a man at home in his element. It was there, in that brief suspension, that the composition settled: dory on the trailer, net pooled at his feet, beach behind, the unseen sea in front, all held together by the line of his gaze.

I worked with a stripped-down, manual-wind Nikon, a 105mm lens nearly wide open, hovering at the edge of motion blur. Frame after frame, I followed the slight shifts in his posture and the subtle rearrangement of the background, waiting for boat, man, and shoreline to fall into a single, balanced composition of form and color. By the time the work around us resumed and the small stillness was broken, I still wasn’t certain whether I had found the image I was searching for.

As with so many photographs I make, the truth revealed itself later on the light table. When the processed Ektachrome lay under the cool glow of the viewing lamp, one frame rose above the rest: Dominic standing in his beached dory, net at his feet, gaze turned toward the surf just out of view. The serenity in that moment—tired, unposed, unguarded—reminded me of other quiet portraits I would make a world away, like Mona Lisa di Gratteri: a fleeting calm held in a fraction of a second.

It was around this time, early in my career, that I began to understand the influence of photographers Sam Abell and Jay Maisel—their assertion that luck favors preparation, perseverance in pursuit of the subject and its composition. Of equal importance is a keen attention to the edges of the viewfinder and a precise crop as the elements within dance, shift, and intertwine. In the end, it is the photographer’s responsibility to release the shutter at the precise instant those elements converge—a moment that waits for no one.

Today, much of that world has changed. The old surf dories have mostly vanished from Montauk’s beaches, and the haul-seine nets that once combed the nearshore waters have been replaced by other methods, other boats, other rules. What remains here is a quiet record: a working fisherman in his beached dory on Gurney’s Beach, net in hand, held for just an instant at the close of an era.

It was a good catch for Dominic and the crew that morning—and, in that brief, unguarded pause, for the photographer as well.
